Post Arrivalists

The 1990s were a seminal time. The Cold War had suddenly ended, the War on Terrorism wasn’t yet imagined. Societie’s cultural norms languised everywhere waiting to be teased, tested, and knocked down. The Post Arrivalists became a vehicle for pushing on those tired old boundaries, smashing through with every new performance. Below are a few photos and a link to a video of the 1993 Sydney Biennale show at The Performance Space, Redfern.

Note: The YouTube algorithm has decided that viewing the human anatomy displayed in this human art work must be restricted to humans over the age of 18 years. The performer’s entrance to the stage in this show was deliberately confronting, crawling along upside-down, monkey style, wearing only their boots, underneath a pole that was suspended from the ceiling above the audiences heads.

That said, this work is a cool example of art enriching culture, infusing the culture with new ideas and perspectives, made by professional and trained artists, supported with funding by the Australian Arts Council, and these performances were included as part of the Biennale Of Sydney one of Australia’s premier art festivals. This Post Arrivalist Biennale show had near full house attendance on each of the five nights it was performed.

The human body and art have always been united ever since the first brush strokes on cave walls many millennia ago. Very few people, aside from the puritanical weirdos who wield power in the USA, try to separate one from the other. Art is so much poorer when it allows the power of religious delusion to define pornography and censor the image.

And we live in existential times with Ai posing an immediate threat to humanity. The human body needs to be displayed and revealed in all its glory and splendour ever so much more than before… before the Ai/drones/robots take over… before we are bypassed by superior intelligence and relegated to the distant past.
